Music Production & Engineering WEBQUEST

Introduction

The modern age has blessed us with the ability to capture and play back sound. From the phonograph to MP3, we're forever improving audio technology in a quest to make music more accessible. How will we listen to music in the future? If the past is any indication, the preferred format will be smaller, faster, and beyond our wildest dreams.

The 21st Century and beyond If the past is any indication of how you will listen to music in 20 years, expect the unexpected. Rapid advances in chip technology could bring a Bluetooth-type chip into the audio world. We could all be "pierced" with microchips instead of earrings. Those chips may enable you to walk into a music "station" and call out the name of the song you want to hear, only to have it start to play right into your inner ear. The future of music no doubt involves convenience, and some form of the celestial jukebox. Access to every song ever recorded will be at your fingertips - or more likely your vocal chords, as voice-recognition technology will likely become seamlessly integrated into our music-selection process.

The Process
The process is relatively simple. Do not get overwhelmed! Your instructor will decide what type of document you are to prepare based on what you already know. Here are the steps to follow. When you have finished step 6, you are done! The first step is always the most difficult to take. So take a deep breath and get started!

SLIDE 1

Introduce yourself and your musical interests
1 Slide

Begin with  a paragraph to introduce something about you and how your musical interests have developed.  Some questions you may want to use as a basis for this introduction are the following:
  • What kinds of music have been exposed to you?
  • Who has helped influence your musical interests?
  • Do you play an instrument?
  • Do you listen to the radio?  If so, what stations?
  • HOW do you listen to music (iPod, Phone, Pandora, Spotify, XM, Streaming, CD Player, etc....)
You may also want to include a graphic or picture of yourself here.

SLIDE 2,3,4

Favorite groups/composers (minimum of 3)
3 Slides
For this section, you need to write a paragraph for each of your favorite groups/composers.  Be sure to include all of the following for each group/composer:
  • Group's/composer's style of music
  • Your favorite songs or CD titles for each group/composer
  • Why you like the group/composer
  • Provide ONE Youtube Video for each group/artist.

SLIDE 5 & 6

Pop Artists / Music from Different Cultures
2 Slides
Sometimes we all get "lost" in our own little world and culture. Sometimes its hard to reach out and discover that there is music out there that may be of interest to us. This section will help to expose you to music of cultures other than your own. Perhaps you may pursue these interests further in the future!  Your goal in this section is to find 2 POP ARTISTS from another country that you find interesting or enjoy. You may reach into your own ethnic/cultural background or venture into other cultures. Be sure to include the following for each:

  • Name of country/culture
  • Include a PICTURE
  • Your own description of the music.
  • PLEASE ADD ONE YOUTUBE VIDEO LINK EACH "CULTURAL" STYLE YOU RESEARCHED.

SLIDE 7

Creating music with a computer - APPS or WEB BASED PROGRAMS
1 Slide
Much of the music heard today on radio, tv, or in the movies is composed and performed with the use of a computer. Music workstations are fairly inexpensive and fairly easy to use.  Your mission is to delve into the world of computer generated music and find some resources in case you are ever interested in pursuing computer music!
Please find 4 resources for creating music.  Two should be APPS and two should be online, web based programs.

1. APP 1:______________________________
2. APP 2:______________________________
3. Online/Web Program:__________________
4. Online/Web Program:__________________

Include the following:
  • Description of site
  • Link to site
  • Usefulness to you

SLIDE 8

Summary
1 Slide

Write a paragraph that summarizes your experience in this WebQuest.  Some items you may want to include in this paragraph are the following:

  • New sites you have found
  • Usefulness to you in the future
  • New concepts you have learned
  • New software processes you have mastered
  • Sites you plan to continue to visit
